A Driving Theory Test is a test which you take on a computer at a test centre. Some important things to know about a Driving Theory Test are:

  • You must pass before you can book your practical driving test;
  • You can book your Driving Theory Test any time after your 17th birthday;
  • You cannot book your Driving Theory Test until you have a provisional driving licence;
  • You can practice driving with a professional driving instructor or went being accompanied by a suitable person before you pass your Driving Theory Test so long as you have a provisional driving licence;
  • your Practical Driving Test. If you do not pass your practical test in this time, then you will need to retake your theory test.

There are Driving Theory Test centres all around the country, but you may have to travel a short distance if you live in a rural area. You can use this link to check the nearest centre to you on the gov.uk website.

The test itself consists of 2 sections:

  • A multiple-choice section with 50 questions. Some relate to a video. The pass mark for this section is 43 / 50
  • A hazard perception section, where you are shown videos and have to spot hazards. The pass mark for this 44 / 75.

You will receive your results at the test centre at the end of your test.

There are plenty of books and guides to help you prepare for your Driving Theory Test. Once you are nearly ready, you can also take a practice test for free here.

Give yourself plenty of time to get ready for the test. It’s not something you will be able to pass without preparation. But if you put in the groundwork and keep calm you will get through.

The pass rate for the Driving Theory Test is slightly under 50%, with women being more likely to pass than men. Over time, the percentage of people who pass has been falling, although there was a spike up during Covid, when far fewer tests were taken.

Don’t worry if you don’t pass your test first time though. You can always re-take it and you’ll be better prepared for the exam next time around. Most people fail the test, so don’t think you are out of the ordinary. Just keep calm and prepare well for the test. It’s not as easy as many people think! Good luck!
