Does learner driver insurance cover my driving test?

Yes, learner driver insurance from The Green Insurer covers you during your driving test. Once you pass your driving test your insurance will end.

Are learner plates a legal requirement?

Yes, L plates are a legal requirement for learner drivers in the UK.

Driving without L plates or plates that don't meet the correct legal specifications, you could receive a fine as well as up to 6 penalty points on your licence.

What the legal specifications of L plates?

By UK law, the L plates must be clearly visible to others from:

  • in front of the vehicle
  • behind the vehicle

The L plates should have a red letter on a white background, they should measure 178cm x 178cm, other sizes are shown below

Can a learner driver drive my car?

To drive your car, the learner driver must be insured. They can either be a named driver on your policy, or have their own separate learner driver insurance, that’s linked to your car.

If the learner is on your policy as a named driver, then your NCD is at risk if they need to make a claim. If they have their own learner driver insurance policy, then your NCD isn't at risk as it's a separate insurance policy.

Who can supervise a learner driver?

The supervisor must be at least 25 years old. The must have a full driving licence for the type of car being driven (manual or automatic) and have held that valid licence for a minimum of three years.

What is the best way to learn to drive?

Take professional driving lessons and practice on a friend or relative’s car to gain more experience and confidence.

Can learner drivers go on a dual carriageway?

Yes, learner drivers can drive on dual carriageways.

Can learner drivers go on a motorway?

To drive on the motorway, the learner driver must be supervised by a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and the car must have dual controls.

It’s illegal for a learner driver to go on the motorway if they’re only accompanied by friends or family member.
